Non-Executive Member

Who can become a Non-Executive Board Member?

Anyone can apply to become a Non-Executive Board Member of a Health Body.

Scottish Ministers are committed to having Boards that reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. Applications are particularly welcomed from groups currently under-represented on Scotland’s public bodies, such as disabled people, those from minority ethnic communities, people aged under 50 and women.

What skills and experience do I need to have?

Non-Executive members hold the Executive to account for the delivery of strategy, ensure value for money and that risks are managed and mitigated effectively.  All members have a collective responsibility for the performance of the organisation.

In addition to this you will need to demonstrate behaviours that align with the NHS Scotland Values

The NHS Scotland Values are care and compassion, dignity and respect, openness, honesty and responsibility, quality and teamwork.

Full details of the essential and desirable skills required are outlined in the Blueprint for Good Governance in the roles and responsibilities section.

What is the application process?

All appointments are made following a values-based appointment process which usually a 2 stage process. A first stage is an application form. Successful candidates will then be invited to undertake an online psychometric test followed by a competency-based interview.
