Board Development

The Board Development team at NHS Education for Scotland have created a learning and resource site to enhance the development and training for Board Members.

The TURAS Learn website helps to prepare and sustain NHS Scotland Non-Executive Board members and Board Chairs to effectively govern the quality and performance of the delivery of health and social care service to the people of Scotland.

New materials and learning modules are updated regularly and the team welcome your feedback on the materials and site. This site is for you and your develop needs so let the team know what you need.

Helpful Resources

Some handy themed booklets ‘What Non-Executive Members need to know.’ are provided below.

Some of this content is now available in different forms on the Board Development TURAS Learn site.

Non-Executive Board Member Appraisals

Non-Executive Appraisals are used for the Scottish Government to assess any development needs across NHS Scotland Boards and assist with the re-appointment process.

Yearly Appraisal meetings should be carried out between the Chair of the NHS Board and Non-Executive Board Members. Use the template below to guide the Appraisal conversation, the template should be completed and agreed before submitting to the OCENHS Team ocenhs@gov.scot

NHS Scotland Chair Appraisals

Chair Appraisals use a multi-rater system on TURAS Appraisal, this allows Chairs to reflect on their performance and gain insight from key stakeholders before undertaking an appraisal conversation with the Director General for Health and Social Care Chief Executive of NHS Scotland.

Chairs will need to set up a TURAS account to access the Appraisal system. Guidance on how to access the system and paperwork template available below.

Principles of Public Life

People who wish to be appointed to roles in public life have to pass a Fit and Proper Person test which is described in the document attached below.

Part of that test involves agreeing to be bound by the Members’ Code of Conduct for the organisation (each Board has this available on their NHS website) and to applying the Principles of Public Life in Scotland if appointed.
