Blueprint for Good Governance

The Second Edition of the Blueprint for Good Governance, published in December 2022, expands on the first edition published in 2019 information provided below.

The Second Edition now includes a definition of what is meant by ‘good’, placing more emphasis on the delivery mechanisms and the need to apply a continuous improvement approach to healthcare governance arrangements.

The Blueprint for Good Governance, published in January 2019, draws on current best practice to ensure all boards assess and develop their corporate governance systems.

The matters considered by the Blueprint are consistent with the governance reviews undertaken in both NHS Highland and NHS Tayside as well as the work of Audit Scotland and the Scottish Parliament’s Health and Sport Committee.

Active Governance

A key development to enhance Good Governance across Scotland is ‘Active Governance’. This is a developmental programme to assist Boards to use data and intelligence for assurance and be comfortable using information in this way. This programme has been developed in collaboration with NHS Boards, data specialists and organisational development leads to ensure compatibility and relevance to NHS Scotland. Further information can be found on the Board Development TURAS Learn site, please note you will need to log into the site to access these materials.

Annual Self-Assessment

A key part of development is to assess and evaluate current practices and look at ways to innovate. A key aspect of this is the Blueprint for Good Governance Self Assessment. This gives Boards the opportunity to reflect and evaluate their current governance arrangements against the Blueprint on annual basis and create Action Plans to address any areas of development. These plans are then made available on each Boards website. See your current plan on your Board site.

Additional guidance on the new Self-Assessment that aligns with the Second Edition of the Blueprint for Good Governance will be available shortly.
